Vesak

These photos were taken during Vesak at the Quan Am Son Temple in Bombay. Vesak is a Buddhist festival that commemorates the birth of Buddha. My favorite is probably the photo of the Buddha statuette being washed with water. To get this shot, I asked my mom to pour water over it several times until I captured the perfect moment—and after a few tries, I finally did. This was after everyone else had done their own washing of the Buddha, so thankfully no one had to wait around and watch me take photos. So, thanks Mom. The story behind the photos of the singer is pretty interesting too. I can’t remember her name, but apparently she’s a very famous Vietnamese singer in the U.S. I had no idea at the time until my mom told me afterward. So I guess that was my little brush with fame. Pretty exciting.
Here’s an excerpt about my experience:
"... I decided to go out with my mom to a different temple to celebrate Vesak—a Buddhist festival that commemorates the birth of Buddha—and it was a good time. It had very similar festivities to the previous festivals I’ve been to so far: the whole place was decorated with flags, banners, statues, and monuments; there were rousing performances such as the dancing dragons, which is the best type of performance; food stalls with delicious cuisine as always; and the people—just celebrating and enjoying the festival.
